how do I turn off align to slide?

in powerpoint I want to align some object within a certain space but the 'align to slide' option seems to be selected and I can't unselect it, can anyone help?

You have no alternative unless you select multiple objects. When 2 or more objects are selected the Align Selected Objects option is the default. You might want to review the various Help topics on the subject: Align objects
