Excel 2013 sluggish

I have been using Excel 2003 in the office for a long time on relatively slow PCs. I just moved to excel 2013 at home on a brand new and powerful computer (Intel core i7 8gb RAM running windows 8...). I find the new  excel 2013 generally very sluggish. Nothing that actually prevents me from working but significant enough to be annoying and slow me in my work. Every action seems to be executed with an annoying small lag even on tiny spreadsheets (<100 entries - basic cell calculations). Is it normal that excel 2013 is far less reactive on a powerful computer than excel 2003 on a 6 years old machine? Any tip? It is so frustrating that I am considering going back to excel 2003.

Many thanks,

I had the same issue. I found that if you go to File>Options>Advanced>Display and check the box that says "Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration" (just about halfway down) it does the trick.  I am not too sure if this works for the other apps, but will update the thread if I see that it does.

    Cheers!

    Hi Everyone,

My experience is exactly reflected as described by fabricefabricefabrice in his entry 5 Apr 2013.

I've found a work-around that completely eliminated the lag for my configuration as follows:

Go to File ---> Options ----> Advanced ---> Editing Options

    and uncheck "Automatic Flash Fill"

This workaround works (in my configuration) even with Hardware Acceleration, and "Allow editing directly in cells" enabled.

    I hope this helps you.

    (My config is Toshiba Satellite P50t, i7 CPU, 16GB, Windows 8 x64)

Microsoft, as retribution for my time and effort you can send a cheque for $20 to UNICEF.

    Hi,

    Thank you for replying.

Try the below steps and check it helps:

    Method 1:

    · Open Excel 2013 and click on the File button and select Options.

    · Navigate to ‘Save’ options and put a check on the option ‘Don’t always show the backstage when opening or saving files’

    · Uncheck the option ‘Always show “Sign in to SkyDrive” location during save’ and put a check on the option Save to computer by default.

    Method 2:

If the above Method fails then you may also set the calculation to manual and check the result.

    · Open Excel 2013, Click on file and then options > Formulas > Workbook calculation > Manual.

    Let us know the result.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community. I understand how hard it is when the program does not work as expected. I will assist you with the issue you are facing with Excel.

In order to troubleshoot the issue related to Excel, try the step below:

Let’s start Excel in safe mode and verify the result:

Follow the below mentioned steps to start Excel in safe mode:

    * Hold Windows key + R.

    * Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

    Excel /safe

Note: There is space between Excel and /

If Excel safe works, disable the add-ins following steps mentioned below and determine the problem causing add-in:

    a) Click on File menu, click Options, Add-ins, Go button besides Manage: Com-in Add.

    b) Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the checkbox.

    c) Close the Excel program and restart it.

    d) Disable each add-in one at a time, restart Excel, and repeat the above procedure. If the issue reappears again, it will help you to determine which add-in is causing this issue.

    Step 2:

If the above step fails, repair the Office 2013 installation and check if it helps.

Refer the link below to know on how to repair Office 2013:

I hope the above steps helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Office related issues let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.
