Unknown Column

I  have a worksheet that has a column to the left of the row numbers. This column has two little headers numbered 1 & 2. There is a + / - sign button further down that when toggled hides/uhides a number of rows. How do I remove this column

I have Excel 2010, but it's similar in 2007.

First select all the cells in the sheet by clicking the square in the upper left corner.

Then in the "Data" tab under "Outline," click

   Ungroup > Clear outline
