Try doing Office button > Excel Options, then Advanced, scroll down to General, then uncheck Ignore Other Applications that use DDE.

    Hope that helps.

You either have a single instance or Excel runing or multiple instances, I suspect you actually have a single instance of excel containing multiple workbooks.

If you minimise the Workbook that is visible (thats not minimise excel itself) you can then bring another workbook forward, or you can do the same from the Excel icon on the taskbar.

If you mean you want to run completely seperate instances of Excel, start Excel, then open the file, repeat this proccess to open another workbook

If you want to do this, you can simply start a second instance of Excel from the start menu.  To open existing files, you either have to use Office-button/File > Open, or drag and drop files from a Window/Desktop into the application.  Hope that helps.

I believe Excel 2013 lets you open each Workbook in it's own window with it's own Ribbon, just like Word already does.

Is there a way of opening multiple instances of excel without doing this? i have two monitors and I want to be able to work on a couple excel sheets and have them next to each other. When I disable "ignore other applications that use DDE" i am unable to open excel sheets from my desktop. not the end of the world just kind of annoying.

What is the "Office button", and where do we find it?  And why isn't the obvious original question, which every Excel user must ask himself eventually, answered in Microsoft Office Help?  A simple task that should take me 5 minutes took me an hour, because after wasting time trying to get Excel to work they way it used to, I had to install OpenOffice to get it done.  Grrh!
