multilevel caption numbering

Using Word 2007.

I want to be able to label my figures as Figure 1a, Figure 1b, Figure 1c etc. but can't figure out how to do this. I can only get Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. I still want to be able to cross-reference the figures in the text so I dont want to just type the captions in without using the caption tool.

Please help! This is so frustrating.

    The 'proper' way to do this is kind of labour intensive and involves editing field codes. If you are up to the challenge your fields should look like this

    Caption 1a -> {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }{SEQ FigX \* alphabetic }

    Caption 1b -> {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \c }{SEQ FigX \* alphabetic }

    Caption 1c -> {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \c }{SEQ FigX \* alphabetic }

    Caption 2 -> {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }

    The \c switch tells the sequence to repeat the last caption number.

    Perhaps you could use ListNum fields, but that might be more trouble than it's worth...

    I believe you have to add the a, b, etc. manually when you have to crossreference specific parts.

    Sorry, I should have been clear on that. The 1 is not the chapter number. I want the figures to be numbered sequentially throughout the document regardless of chapter (I.e. Figure 1 through to 35), but some of the figures are in sets, e.g. Fig 1a, 1b and 1c.

    But thanks for responding.

    Is the 1 the chapter number?

    Select a figure.

    Click Insert Caption on the References tab of the ribbon.

    Click Numbering...

    Select a, b, c, ... from the Format dropdown.

    Tick the check box Include chapter number.

    Click OK twice.
