Good morning all
I want to make an offsite windows server backup and therefore I must have a storage network
My first question is: what storage network used? Iscsi a good choice for me?
My second question: I have an extended replica site (where I replicated my hyper-v VMs) with a different network from my other servers so my question is: can I put ISCSi (if it is the good choice) in this replica site?
if yes, how?
thank you in advance

    Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum!

Based on your description, I understand that you want to operate offsite backup to a remote NAS. Basically, we can use iSCSI or SMB/CIFS network shares, and the choice is dependent on your own production environment. Here are two articles that you may find helpful, comparing these two options:
    https://www.high-rely.com/2015/07/08/comparing-iscsi-and-windows-shares/

    https://serverfault.com/questions/1031393/is-smb-safer-than-iscsi-for-connection-to-a-nas

Please note: Information posted in the given link is hosted by a third party. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy and effectiveness of information.

For your second question, I need to learn more about your production environment first:

    1. It sounds like that you have several physical machines, one is a Hyper-V host and I guess is also the one you will install your windows server backup service on, one is an extended replica server for replicating your Hyper-V VMs and I guess is also the server you want to set up as your remote backup destination, and the rest is sharing the same network with your replica server? Are all of these servers in a same network domain, or you actually have multi-site environment? What is your network environment exactly.

    2) If you use iSCSI, only one machine may be connected to an iSCSI drive at a time, although each drive may be “re-shared” to the network. And you mo matter which option you choose, you need to ensure that this network only serves for storage backup. Both iSCSI and SMB network shares can be used in multi-site, but in a multi-site environment, the network configuration can be a little different.

Finally, if you choose to use some third-party backup tools like Veeam, you may need to consult their supporters to learn more about the network configuration.

    Thanks for your support!

    BR,
    Joan

@JiayaoZhu hi thank you very much for your answer, indeed I have 3 physical servers, the first is where my hyper-v vm is located, the second is where I replicate my hyper-v vm (these two servers have the same network) on the other hand the third is where I made my extended replication (this server has different network from the others)
I want to presume that all of this is in an environmental test.
so in my case in the first server I will install the backup and in the third server I can remote backup destination since it has a different network? or do i need another special offside server for remote backup?
    thank's.
