Excel 2011 for Mac. Sheet tabs missing.

When I have several workbooks open, when I switch between workbooks the sheet tabs are missing (most, but not all of the time - it's somewhat random and each worksheet will sometimes show the tabs, but usually not). I also can't get the screen to scroll when selecting a range that goes off the bottom of the screen. I can only show the tabs and fix the problem by twice clicking on the green circle at top left of the screen. I have show sheet tabs set in Preferences, and none of the sheets are set to be hidden.

I had a similar problem in an excel file with three sheets. When I activated one of the sheets the tabs would disappear and I couldn't get back to the other sheets.

Here's how I fixed it. I saved the file to the cloud and then opened it on a PC using Office 2013, checked to see if the problem was still there, and yes it was.  In the tab-less sheet I clicked on VIEW and noticed that the SPLIT option was turned on. I turned it off and the tabs reappeared. I saved the document and that seems to have worked. 

Hope this helps someone. If anyone know the Mac-equivalent commands in Excel please let us know.

 MacBook Air (Early 2015), OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and Excel for Mac 2011, ver 14.5.9

    Here is how I solved the issue on Macbook

    Click Window and then Zoom Window

    I think if we accidentally click on the menu that creates this issue

    If viewing the spreadsheet in full screen, yes, the tabs show.  However, then the very top title bar (that shows Excel menus, computer batter, date/time, etc. does not show.  

    MacBook:  OSX Yosemite 10.10.3.

    Bottom line:  in Excel 2011 for Mac (v. 14.3.9) I'm unable to view the worksheet tabs AND the top most title bar at the same time.  I've had the problem for at least 3 years.  I've tried the suggestions in this thread with no success.  Any other suggestions?

    I think I've figured out the issue.  All of my Excel docs are saved in the format of "Excel 97-2004 Workbook (.xls)".  Whenever I open those documents, the bottom worksheet tabs are hidden under the dock.  I've finally figured out that I can resize the window

    • just have to do that EVERY time I open the document.

    If I re-save the document in the format of "Excel Workbook (.xlsx) ... then the document opens and everything is visible.

    The main problem with the .xlsx format is I encounter people who say they can't open that format.   

    I can't believe I've been dealing with this for 3 years and only just came up with the solution!

    Sometimes you can fix a workbook that has corruption in it by saving it to a different file format. For example, use File > Save As and choose Macro Enabled Workbook (.xlsm). See how that works, and if it's OK use File > Save As and change it back to Excel format (.xlsx) or Excel binary format (.xlsb).
