Why does the word count differ on the same document in Word 2010?

I'm running Word 2010, and have word count enabled both in documents I'm working on and also in the file view when I go into a folder to look at the list of .docx files I've typed. The word count listed in that view for any given document is frequently off by as much as 1,000 words or more from what's shown at the bottom of the window when I have the document open for editing, even when I have just opened it and made no changes yet. Does anyone know why this would be?

For the record, I'm running Office 2010 in a WIndows 7 Home Premium environment.

This issue seems to exist since Win Vista days.

The Word count showing in Explorer window is not reliable and currently there has been no improvement.
