When I launch Word, it automatically opens all recent documents. Quite annoying. Can't find remedy in Word Preferences. What am I missing?

Adding to Bob's post...

Look in System Preferences > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps

You're most likely running up against one of Apple's latest "can't live without me" frills called Resume. Control it through System Preferences.

My Word stopped opening all those tens of documents after opening it with ctrl+Shift.

I just found a solution in a different discussion that might be a fix:

Hold the SHIFT key down and start Word.

    Good luck.

Hi,  I am running Mavericks and have the "Close windows when quitting an application" box check as well as the "reopen windows when logging back in" Unchecked on the restart screen, yet Word continues to open every recent document when I launch.  Can anyone help me fix this?

I had the same problem.  What worked was setting the "Recent Items" tab (circled in red below) in System Preferences-General to "none".  Good luck!
