Excel charts bug

There seems to be a bug in Excel 2007 charts.  I have a chart, and I manually entered the series name for one of the series in the chart.  The series name is displayed in the legend.  When I changed the case of a letter in the series name from upper case to lower case, Excel did not update the legend.  I solved the problem in an indirect way, by changing the series name to something completely different, and changing it again to what I wanted.  However, I think there is a bug.

The series name was: "Months' Supply, (R)".  I wanted to change it to "Months' supply, (R)".  I am running Windows XP, Excel 2007 with SP2.

If you want the series name displayed in the chart to change automatically when you change the series name entry then you have to enter the series name in a cell and refer the cell to the legend name in the graph. i.e.:

    ·         Right click on the series name displayed in the graph, click on Select Data.

    ·         Under Legend entries (series) click on Edit. Under Series name, point to the cell where you have entered the series name.

    ·         Now when you edit the data in the referred cell, it will automatically update the series name displayed in the chart.

If you have manually entered the series name in the graph, when you change the series name it will not reflect in the graph.

Does the issue occur with a particular Excel file or all the Excel files?

Is the file saved on a network or locally saved on the system?

Which chart have you inserted in Excel?

We tried to reproduce the issue and it is working fine at our end.

Also check if service pack 3 is installed for Office 2007:

To check if the service pack is installed, follow the steps below:

    ·         Open Excel.

    ·         Click on Office icon< Help and choose the option About Office Excel and check if the service pack 3 is installed.

If service pack 3 is not installed, download and install it from the link mentioned below and check if it helps:

I encountered this bug today running Office 2007 and Service Pack 3, so the original workaround suggested (change the text, then retype with the correct case) still applies.  I'm curious if this bug persists in newer versions of Office?

I started from scratch again, opened a new workook (without saving it), created a new chart, and I had the same problem.   Note that the series name is not read from a cell, but I typed it in manually using:

Right click on chart -> Select data -> Edit the series -> Enter series name.

The work around works for me, and since I am a corporate user, I can't install SP3.  But I wanted to raise the issue as a bug.

I reported this bug back in July 2012.

The work around you used is currently the best approach.
