I have a template with a Sidebar included that has the sample text in it. I cannot click anywhere to get to edit that text in the sidebar. What do I need to do to be able to edit the text in an existing sidebar?

It's possible that the sidebar is really a text box that's anchored in the header of the document. If that's the case, double-click in the header area to open that pane, and then try clicking in the sidebar.
If that isn't it, please post back with the name of the template and where you got it, so we can examine it.
