Superscript not displaying as superscript

i am trying to display the text "yd^2" with the number 2 as a superscript. I format the "2" to be a superscript but when I close out of the format dialogue box the number "2" is not showing as as superscript. the text is displaying as "yd2" instead. Does anyone know how to fix this?
