created a doc using one of the publishing templates; printed doc and shadow boxes around the text. what am I doing wrong? how can I set up to print w/o the boxes around text?

Don't know that you're necessarily doing anything wrong :-) Do the shadows appear when viewing the document on screen?
Which specific template are you using?
Is Office fully updated [14.2.4]?
Check the mfr's web site to make sure you have the most current driver for your printer.
