Excel for Mac Crashed module - HTML Import errors

Question

Mac OS X, Version 10.7.5, Safari, Chrome, Firefox browsers all result in the same error.  Using Office 2011 for mac - trying to open an xml file from browser or any excel file received from others and get the following error.  Same error reported from Office 2010 running on Windows 7 OS with Parallels on same Mac.  I was able to open these files until a couple of weeks ago.  Not sure if anything changed since then.  Verified with other users that they could open the same files with no issue on different computers with various os.

Glad you're making good progress :-). Just a few observations...

I believe the initial problem was caused by a failure to update Office 2011 -- The error log indicated that the update level at the time was 14.0.0 which is the original release dating back to March of 2010. The current version is 14.3.1 so I'm thinking that it wasn't actually reinstalling that helped, but the fact that a new installation also forced updating to the current version.

Also, I don't understand how reinstalling Office 2011 could have any bearing whatsoever on the performance of Office 2010 in a VM. There must have been other local issues that were addressed by reformatting the HD.

FWIW, reinstalling Office on a Mac is rarely a fix for anything. That's a Windows hack which is easier & safer for most users than having to deal with the Windows Registry. OS X works differently, though.

The new version of Office solved the issue with files OTHER than specific xml files downloaded from a browser from a particular application.  It was determined that those files have an issue with converting xml to excel in some instances which they will be resolving.

the files do open successfully on a native Windows system with Outlook (not sure of the version).  I now know the files also won't open on ANY mac Office version.  I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Office.  So now only files downloaded from a web browser exported from one specific application fail to open.  I've notified the developers of the application of the error as it looks now like it is on that side.

Can you verify if these files open on a native Windows system with Outlook 2010 (not on parallels).

Also check if you are able to save these attachments and open them in Excel.

Ensure that all available updates are installed on the system.
