Access 2010 Locks Up When Editing Form & Form Code Simultaneously

I have this problem with Access 2010 where if I try to view the code and the form in design view at the same time it locks up and freezes randomly, and it takes a minute or so before I can start working again.

Is there any particular reason for this problem?  It seems to happen consistently.

It also happens if I have multiple code windows up and flip between different design view windows.  So it creates a huge delay going between one form and another copying routines and buttons/etc. where I need similar types of processes in place.  Sometimes the freeze is also triggered when I go to edit a control in form or if I need to pull up the code window again that is behind other windows or when clicking through different lines in the code.

For now I'm using Access 2003 on a remote PC, this is how annoying it is to work with 2010 with this situation.

Hi Matthew

Hope you're well.

From what you're saying we have:

  • work PC with enterprise OS software of Win 7 (correct me if I'm wrong please)
  • MS Office 2010
  • Pointsec encryption

Question:

Is the file you're working on encrypted itself? You can check it via right-click and picking Properties -> Advanced button. Either the color of the file name under Windows Explorer will be green if I'm not mistaken.

Suggestion:

  1. Could you please check via Trust Center settings if you have MS Office File Validation Add-In enabled? If so, try disabling it and restart MS Office applications.
  2. Try copying the content to a new Access database, save it under new name and test.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Muzzy

    Hi Matthew

    Thank you.

Indeed. Sometimes it's realy hard to find this needle in a stack of hay ;)

I would also agree on statement that something could get scrambled during the upgrades. Encryption could take its part here as well (probably mainly in shuffling stuff in your user profile). Anyways....

I'm happy to hear its's working better now.

    Happy days :)

    Good luck with it!

    Regards

    Muzzy

Thanks for the help cranky27, I managed to fix this by resetting my windows xp profile (rename Documents and Settings/userID to Documents and Settings/userID_old and reboot), so something in my settings must have been borked in some way and it may have had to do with upgrading from 2003 -> 2007 -> 2010 rather than being a fresh install.

I don't know what it was unfortunately and sometimes there is nothing easily detectable.

I don't use linked tables as I initiate form recordset at runtime directly to backend tables.  I'm not sure what disabling DDE does from looking at what DDE is, but disabling it under DDE operations didn't seem to have any effect on the issue.

I'm assuming not everyone is having the problem but I unfortunately don't have another PC I can install this on to test further right now.  I may try something on home computer later, but environment isn't comparable (Win7 rather than XP)

I tested on home PC and couldn't reproduce it.  Must be environment related.  Office 2010 is on a very limited set of PCs at work so it will be difficult to troubleshoot this further to determine if it's a hardware or software problem with that environment.

I think some of the slowness I do experience is due to the work pcs being so bogged down with security junk (pointsec encryption/etc.), but I didn't have this problem in 2003 so 2010 is more picky about things.

    Hi Matthew

Did you try re-linking your tables or disabling DDE refresh?

    Thanks

    Kind regards
