Cross Reference Updating CRASHES

I am trying to update all my cross-reference table and figure header links in my 180 page document. Unfortunately word is trying to find all the original table and excel data in those tables and graphs and it would update unless you click through every single error message and say "ok".  Then it takes longer and longer and then it will freeze or crash. Is there anyway to STOP word looking for the original table and figures data from the excel source. I don't want to insert these as a picture file since I often need to make changes later.  I want to be able to CTRL-A update cross references without crashing the doc.  Please help!

Try opening the Word document in application safe mode and check if you are able to update the cross reference. To do this,

Click on start>run> type Word /safe and click OK.

Note: There is a space between Word and '/'.

If it works in application safe, then try the steps given in the below:

You may also restart the computer in clean boot and perform a test.

Note: Ensure to restart the computer in normal mode by following Step 7, after completing the troubleshooting steps.
