I am using MS Access 2010 on a XP workstation
When I exit out of the database I am using the file changes to Database1.mdb
Why and how do I change this?

A name change like that usually indicates that Compact on Close is enabled and the database is not compacting properly. But the original file should still exist unless the compacting was so messed up that the entire file just vanished.
Compacting can fail if the file is large and the compacting is done while the file is on a server with an inconsistant conenction.
That is not normal behavior. Can you duplicate that with a new empty database?
Also make sure that in File > Options you have Compact on Close unchecked.
