Why is "get external data" grayed out within a table?

I copied a table that was live linked to a web site and pasted only the values in a new worksheet.  The values pasted as a table.  I spent hours  trying to find the problem and cannot find a solution.  There are no connections in this new spreadsheet, which I transferred to a new book to be sure to isolate it from the original worksheet.

You would not be able to insert any data inside a table.

You may have to convert the columns to range using the option ‘Convert to Range’ under ‘Design’ ribbon.

When you upload the data from a website and put it onto the table do you receive the below mentioned message

‘Your selection overlaps one or more external data ranges. Do you want to convert the selection to a table and remove all external connections?’
