error Setup has stopped working when installing Microsoft Office 2010

My new laptop is running on Windows 8, it has Microsoft Office 2010 Starter pre-installed,

and I have a valid product key code for the Office Home and Student 2010.

But every time I try to run the start the starter to install the Office it says "Setup has stopped working":

"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is avaliable."

I removed the pre-installed starter from the control panel and downloaded a new one from www.office.com/productkeycard/

However it still says "Setup has stopped working" and I still can't install my Office.

I have tried running the program on compatibility mode and as an administrator, but nothing helps.

"Fix-it" won't work on my Windows 8.

Edit: I looked at the control panel again and I saw a new Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, I tried to uninstall it again and now it shows me a setup error saying that the language of the installation package is not supported by my system. I have been using English as the system language the whole time.

Hi John,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. I understand how hard it is when the program does not get installed as expected. Let me assist you with the issue you are facing with the installation of Office 2010.

This issue might occur due to corrupt Office keys on the computer.

In order to troubleshoot the issue  related to Office, you may try the steps below:

Save the fix it to the desktop and then try to run it to remove Office from the computer.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Note: Ensure to read the Disclaimer before making any changes to the registry.

If the fix it still fails to run, then you may try the manual removal step (Method 4) from the above article to remove Office.

Once Office is removed, try to reinstall the Office 2010 suite, check if it helps.

I hope the above step helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Office related issues let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

    Hi Bill,

I understand how hard it is when the program does not get installed as expected.

I will assist you with the issue you are facing with Office installation.

You may try the steps  below and check if it helps:

Run the fix it from the link below to remove the traces of Office completely from the computer:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Note: Ensure to save the fix it to desktop and then run it to remove Office traces.

Once done, restart the computer and then try to install Office in clean boot:

Refer to the link below to know how to start the computer in clean boot:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Ensure to restart the computer in normal mode once troubleshooting is completed.

Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting with the Office program. If so, you may disable the unwanted software those conflict with the suite or get them updated.

    Let us know the result.

    Thank you.

this didnt help me.  i am stuck with a downloaded version of office 2010 on my new lap top. i am stuck with windows 8. all i want to do is install office so i can use my spread sheets for work. every time i try to install it, i get an error during setup. no reason, just an error. no way to fix it, just an error. no prompt to tell me whats wrong, just an error.

i have uninstalled the free trial office 2010 and downloaded a new microsoft office 2010. i even changed the name of the microsoft help folder (which was a pain because windows 8 is not user friendly) to microsoft help. OLD. that didn't work like it did for others on these chats.

i don't know what to do
