Firstly, I should state that I'm running Word 2013 Home & Student (Final Edition) on Surface RT with neither keyboard nor mouse installed. "Touch/Mouse Mode" in Word is enabled.
Touching the right edge of the table column and holding and then dragging, as was suggested, results in an embedded popup style dialog. Using that dialog one can change various properties; one can even insert and delete columns. There is a textbox for Preferred Column Size. However, changing the value has no visual effect on the column width.
I see that it is possible, after selecting a cell in the table, to use the Layout menu's Cell Size textboxes to manually type in, using the on-screen keyboard, a value for the column width/height. One can alternatively drag the icon in the Ruler to change the column width, once a cell is selected.
What I'm still trying to achieve, is dynamically resizing a table column/row by directly touching the table area somewhere on-screen and resizing by dragging my finger.
