Why does Word open multiple documents when I load only one even though I have previously closed these documents?

When I edit a document, and then formally save and close it, the next time I open Word, even if I am opening another document, BOTH documents load.

How can I stop this from happening?

Thank you

Phillip - That screen shot is of a dialog that exists only in Excel. Word does not have any such Preference.

Two things could cause this (see:  http://www.screencast.com/t/nnncUphI) make sure is looks like in this screenshot. If there is any information in the window highlighted in Yellow  Then you have it setup to open every word file you have in that folder.

Or if you have Lion (OSX.7.2) there is a Feature in General Preferences called  resume can cause it, uncheck it.
