Extra lines in footnote

Extra lines have appeared in my 600+ page document.  One minute, all OK, and then suddenly...Instead of:

_________________________________________separator

Footnote

I have:

__________________________________________separator

Footnote

How do I get rid of the extra lines?  I've spent way too much time trying to get an answer online.  Please help.

Thank you

If you switch to Draft view and then click on Show Footnotes from the Footnotes header bar, you can select the Footnote Separator and modify its paragraph format to remove the extra space after it that it appears to have acquired.  Clicking on Reset may do the same thing.

However perhaps the issue is with the formatting of the paragraph containing the footnote, which will be in the Footnote Text style, which may have acquired some space before it.

Another thing to check is to click on the Show\Hide (¶) button and look for empty paragraph marks (¶) between the footnote separator and the footnotes

Switch to Draft mode (View tab>Document Views) and then go to the References tab and click on the "Show Notes" item in the Footnotes dialog and then click on the dropdown in the Footnotes header bar and select the Footnote Separator item

How do you remove blank lines in Word 2013?  I cannot find where to view the separator and extra lines in draft mode. I would greatly appreciate your guidance with this!
