When I do a save as in excel the application locks up. I doesn't get as far as opening the Save As dialog box. I have to go to the task manager to kill the application. I tried repairing Microsoft office and that didn't work. What is weird is I can do a save but not a save as. Any suggestions?

Hi Earl,

Thank you for choosing Office and providing us an opportunity to assist you.

I will help you to save file using the Save As option in Excel.

Before we proceed, I need more details:

Does this issue occur while using the Save As option for a particular workbook or all workbook?

Are you able to use this option in other Office applications like Word or PowerPoint?

Provide more details to assist you better.

Meanwhile, let us open Excel in its application safe following the steps below:

Click Start, click All Programs, go to Accessories, click Run, type excel /safe (note the space between excel and /)

If the application works fine safe mode, try disabling the add ins for the application and check the result,

  • Click the File tab.
  • Go to Options.
  • Click Trust Center.
  • In Trust Center, click Add-ins.
  • Select or clear the options that you want.

Also ensure to delete all the files present in the following location:

C:\Users(username)\AppData\Local\Temp

Hope the suggestions are helpful. If you need further assistance get back to us and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

Disabling the add ins seems to fix the problem. Thanks Earl
