Keeping Styles and Using the Tab Button

When using any Style, I cannot seem to keep the style once I hit the return button.  Once I select a style and type out my first line and hit return, I can't just hit the tab staying in the same style and make the next level appear.  Once I hit return, I've lost the whole style.  What setting can be used to change this?  I don't want to have to use the Use

Nayewilson,

The behaviour of the enter key can be changed, in the styles pane, click the drop down next to your style, choose change, click in the box for next paragraph and choose the style you want applied, could be the same or another.

Don't know what you mean by hitting the tab though, maybe you are using a multi-level numbering style, if that is the case have a look at the setting in: Office-button - Options for Word - Control - AutoCorrection button - AutoFormat as you type - is there a check next to Set first and left indent with tabs and backspaces?
