I have set my own tab at 1.5" and 7". How do I get rid of the default tabs so that I do not have to tab through them to get to my tabs

You can't delete the default tab stops directly. However, when you set a custom tab stop (for example on the ruler), Word clears the default tab stops on the left of the custom one. For more on working with tabs in Word, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/SettingTabs.htm.

I forgot that files often contain vestiges of former lives.

In the document I was attempting to change, I inserted tab stops from the ruler and from the Tabs dialog box, but neither cleared the default tab stops.  I do not know the source of this document, but apparently it is corrupt in some way. I started over with a new document and the tabs worked as they should.

    Thanks for your response.
