Conflicts when Saving

When I make a change to an Excel file and then save it, instead of overwriting the original file it saves it as filename.conflict1

The original file is also left within the directory.

Anyone got any ideas why this is happening and how I can stop it.

Thanks in anticipation of a response

    Thanks for responding.

This link tells me how to delete the older file when both it and the conflict file are in the directory. I know how to do this.

What I am trying to do is stop the conflict file being created in the first place instead of simply saving the updated original file
