Publishing layout – can I create an automatic table of content?

I am working in Publishing Layout and want to add an automatic table of contents. This is a handbook template that I am developing for a client, so I am not working with existing content. Is there a way to set this up so that when the client adds their text, the table of contents is automatically generated? Working in text view will not be appropriate for this project.

I would appreciate any feedback or directions!

Thank you.

No, automatic TOC is one of many features not supported in Publishing Layout documents.

It could be done but it would require switching between Pub Layout & either Print Layout or Draft view. Also, it most likely would involve VBA support. Based on your comment regarding 'propriety' I doubt there is a feasible suggestion that would provide an acceptable solution.

IMO, Pub Layout view is a cosmetic mode intended to make it easier to create flyers, brochures, short newsletters, etc. It doesn't lend itself to longer or more complex documents.
