Using Ctrl + H replace window for Excel. What are all possible ways to filter out and replace cell values?

So I have searched online on different ways to use Ctrl + H and would like to know ways to use the asterisk * in the replace window. I think there is a way to tell it to replace what is in a cell for a specified range of values with the asterisk. I would like to know several alternatives in using this neat function. Thanks!
