inserting a nonbreaking hyphen

I can not insert a nonbreaking hyphen in Word. The Help-function (and different web pages) tells me to press cmd+shift+hyphen, but that only opens the help menu. I have tried every possible variation of shift, option, ctrl, alt and cmd (and of course hyphen), but without luck. I am still able to get the nonbreaking hyphen using normal hyphen and then search/replace, which gives me a number of options, but it would be far more easy to insert the correct symbol from the beginning.

I use a MacBook Pro, about one year old.

Go to > System Preferences> Keyboard - Keyboard Shortcuts, select Application Shortcuts, then clear the check for Show Help menu(or assign a different one).

Are you using a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air that doesn't have a standard size Keyboard and uses a Function key (fn)?

if so modify as follows: fn+⌘+shift+ hyphen

    See if that helps.

    While word is open:

    Go to :

    1. Apple menu > Preferences
    2. Keyboard
    3. Click on Shortcuts
    4. Click on Keyboard
    5. Scroll through list and see there are any Conflicts will show with a yellow Triangle

If so you will have to reassign the shortcut in Word to remove conflict.

There was another question using keyboard short cuts when person want to go to end of Page Turn out the direction give were wrong for a Laptop Keyboard you had to use fn+shift+Right arrow

    Thank you for answering.

I did what you prescribe, but no yellow triangles or any other sign of disturbing shortcuts. Using the fn-button results in underline, and fn+shift+cmd+- opens the help menu.

Before you go to any other extents, confirm that Office is fully updated [14.3.4], that you've repaired disk permissions [Disk Utility or comparable] & restarted your Mac.

If the issue persists, try the procedure described here to confirm that there are no font issues: **Font Weeding.**

Beyond that we'd need to know OS version info, Language, Keyboard Input settings, etc.

Unless someone has done some customizing on your Mac the keystroke Shift+Command+- should do exactly as you expect without any inherent conflicts... This is a standard keystroke, not really a keyboard shortcut although it can be reassigned.

Thank you for your reply, but the problem still there: pressing cmd+shift +- opens the help menu in Word.

I have now confirmed the update status, repaired disk permissions and got rid of font doublets.

OS version is 10.6.8, language is Norwegian and I am using the computer keyboard.

    Any other tips?

    regards, sjur
