Restore Default Tab Setting

My version of Word 2010 has a default tab set for .49 rather than .5.  If I reset the default in the Paragraph dialog box, it sets for the document on the screen only.  How do I make a permanent change to a default of .5?

Open the Normal.dotm template (by using File>Open and navigate to the User Templates Folder) and make the change in the template itself.  (It's a good idea to add some text to the template, save it, then delete the text and save it again to ensure that the template is actually saved with the change).
