I have Microsoft Office Professional 2010,  Kingsoft and OpenOffice installed on my computer.  How can I set Microsoft Office 2010 as the default program?  I am running Windows 8.1.  but when I click on Default Programs in Control Panel, Microsoft Office Professional 2010 is not even listed.   Neither are any of the Office components listed separately.   Only OpenOffice is listed and it is currently the default program.  I want Microsoft Office Professional to be the default program.

Thank you.  After changing a few file associations as advised, Microsoft Office Professional is now the  default program.

MS Office is not shown as a default program in Default Programs, MS Outlook is, if it has been configured.

Perhaps in the Default Programs Dialogue select OpenOffice and modify its actions.

You may also need to 'repair' Office 2010 to reset the file associations

The simplest way to reset the file associations is to do an Office Repair. This will reset ALL of the file associations at once. Much faster than doing them one file type at a time.

    Repair or Uninstall Office 2013 / 2010 / 2007 / 2003

    Mention the error msg.?

If you uninstall OO you would need to repair/reinstall Office 2010 in order to reset the file associations. Of course you can manualy reset the file associations

The file associations define what program opens a particular file from explorer, eg .doc can be set to Word

Thanks for the response.  I have done all that but whenever I try to open Word or Excel Documents, the documents are opened by OpenOffice and not by Microsoft Office 2010.  If I uninstall OpenOffice, then the Documents do not even open at all.  Instead I get an error message.  What am I doing wrong?
