Excel Changes File Name When Saving

Sometimes it appears Excel 2010 chooses a file name other than the one I have entered.  Unless I notice this in time, the result is saving over a pre-existing file unintentionally.  I believe this is more common with new files that I have just named.  When I "Save As" and select a folder, Excel jumps to one of the names in the folder already and substitutes that file name for the one I have just entered.  Is there an Options setting improvement or another procedure I should follow?  Please advise.

It appears the problem was due to my having selected the "single-click to open files" option.  The solution was to revert to "double-click"".  (My IT office knew this and told me).

After opening a folder using "single click", unbeknownst to me, my mouse was hovering over the file names in the selected folder.  This occured as I moved my mouse from the Save As box to the OK command.  There was no way to see or to prevent it.

So, the recommendation is to use "double click" to open files.  (This setting is in the File>Options area).

    Hi,

Glad to know that the issue is resolved and thank you for sharing the resolution.

I am hard pressed to say the issue has been "resolved".  It is a bug and a pretty unfriendly one at that.  I hope Microsoft fixes it.  AND I could not find the setting in the file-> options "area", and dont' have all afternoon to look for it.
