Private Character Editor - Character Width

I have created a character using the Private Character Editor and cannot find a way to reduce the effective width of that character when it is inserted into a document.  The screenshot below shows the custom character (a subscript 'p') and the large amount of space that is associated with that 'p'.

As a brief background, I need to concatenate items with their values in order for variable names to be displayed on a plot in excel.  I am unaware of a way to include super/subscript characters within a formula result, necessitating the custom subscript 'p' character.

You are correct that this is not uniquely an issue with Excel.  This is an issue with Private Character Editor (or rather more likely an issue with my lack of understanding of Private Character Editor), however I did not see a better/more appropriate category to select.

Also, I wanted to provide a small background so as to not get comments to the effect of "why don't you just format a normal lower case 'p' as subscript".

Thank you for your feedback.  Any additional comments or insight is appreciated.

How does it work if it is inserted in Word or other Office apps.

I don't think its an issue with Excel.
