installing software on a foreign computer

Hi,

I have a bit of a random question!

I bought my laptop and my office software in the UK but i now live in Colombia, South America. My laptop has unfortunatly died and I am going to purchase a new laptop here. I want to know if i can transfer my UK office software to my new Latin American laptop and if it will be compatible because obviously my new laptop will be configured to Latin American standards.

Can this be done or am i better off just buying Office over here in Spanish?

I would really appreciate speedy answers because i hope to buy my new laptop in the next couple of days and am wondering whether to get the office software as a promotional add on or not.

p.s My original laptop was purchased with win7 and i upgraded to win8, and obviously the new laptop will be with win8

Thanks!

Exactly which Office 2013(?) did you buy: Office 2013 1-computer local install or Office 365 5-computer install?

The activation system is a big black hole. There is not a lot of "official" information about it, and a lot of speculation and best guesses.

In theory you should be able to transfer you 2013 to a new computer. In practice it may not be that easy.  MS  has divided the globe up into sales regions.  Part of the reason is US trade regulations.  MS cannot sell "full" encryption to "unfriendly" countries.  It is pretty safe the UK is considered "friendly" and Columbia is not ...

The activation system recognizes (well it's supposed to) your general geographic location so you would probably have issues trying to activate a UK package in Columbia

At the very least you will probably have to download a Columbia version of the installer.  You many have to get MS to replace your Product Key with one that will work there too.

The get the best information you should contact the MS activation center.

If you have the option, I find the online chat less frustrating than phone support.  Plus you get a transcript of the conversation, for when you get forwarded to someone 'better'.

If you do phone in, don't reply to the initial phone system prompts, wait a while until you are offered the option of talking to a live "service" rep.  Explain the problem to them. The first level person is not likely to have a good answer. Ask to be transferred to a supervisor.
