Advanced paragraph/style options ... how does one set them?

I am running Microsoft Office 2011 on a Mac.  From time to time I see such properties as the following on style definitions:

 -- Don't allow hanging punctuation

-- Font Alignment: Baseline (or Font Alignment: Center)

-- Don't adjust space between Latin and Asian text

-- Don't adjust space between Asian text and numbers

 -- Style: Linked, Hidden ...

-- Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style

Where do I adjust or set these options (or others like them, if they are of a type)?  I’ve searched in the font formatting, paragraph formatting, style definition dialogue boxes, and looked through the tabs on the ribbon ... and I haven’t found any way to work with these options?

I feel as if I must be blind, because I thought I knew MSOffice fairly well.  But apparently not!

Thanks

  • Don't allow hanging punctuation: Word>Preferences>Compatibility
  • Font Alignment: Baseline (or Font Alignment: Center), Don't adjust space between Latin and Asian text. Don't adjust space between Asian text and numbers: These normally only appear in styles after they have been created on a computer that has Asian language support added.
  • Style: Linked, Hidden: You can't hide styles in Word 2011. On Word 2007, 2010 and 2013, there is a Styles Management dialog that allows you to hide styles and they will remain hidden on a Mac.
  • You can access all the style options from Word's Format>Style menu command. Select a style, then click on the Modify button. Fro the option Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style, change the Format dropdown to Paragraph and check that option on the Paragraph dialog.

OK, that is all very helpful.  Thanks.

(The "font alignment center" is the one that has primarily been bugging me.  I found that it was part of styles that I had defined and use all over the place; and it was screwing up vertical alignment.  Probably I once had Asian language support enabled at one point, and don't now ... so I can't get rid of it!  But I can redefine the styles from scratch; it is very useful to know where it came from.)

    Thanks very much

There are many formatting options under Word>Preferences>Compatibility that give you access to these settings. Please note, these are not style definitions and do not travel with your document. They are program settings that can be different on every computer.

Sure enough ... I am aware of those.  What I was asking about weren't those, but properties that I can see in some Style definitions and not in others (within the same document).  How I managed to set them in some styles I have no idea.

    Thanks, though
