Sharepoint Designer 2013 install problem

I have Office 365 successfully installed on Windows 8 running on a Mac via a Parallels virtual machine.  All appears to work very well.  I have tried to install SharePoint Designer from the 365 Portal site.  The install file (setupspdretail.x86.en-us_.exe) downloads successfully but when run I get a  "Something went wrong" message (probably the least helpful message that could possibly be conceived!).

I cannot find any debugging info related to this error.  Any suggestions as to how I resolve this?

Workaround!

While the installer programme fails as described above, I had success by downloading the programme directly from here.  It loaded first time and runs perfectly.  It would appear the problem is not with Designer but the helper programme on the 365 portal.

I hope this helps someone else.
