Word 2013 Shape Positioning

When inserting line adjacent to a table which bridges multiple rows the text in those rows are displaced.  In the past I would select the shape and go to the Position tab under More Layout Options.  Unchecking "Layout in table cell" within the Position tab and this problem would be fixed.  It seems that recently in documents I have been working in, the "Layout in table cell" option is grayed out and I can not select it.  Is there a reason this would be grayed out and can it be corrected so I can use this option?

You can position the shape "In line with text" and put it in a (separate) table cell, if that helps.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Unfornunately, it didn't help me.

My problem was that the shape (or image of a shape perhaps) that I was using behind the text in the header row of my table would move the text so it was no longer centred vertically. The shape had transparency so the text would show through as well as other effects.

I did solve the problem by deleting the text in the header row and positioning the shape in the header row (note, it wasn't the full width of the cell and I didn't want to just shade the cell). Next, I typed the text I deleted into a text box and positioned it so it was centred in the cell above the shape I had added. Both the shape and the text box for set "In front of text".

If I made a slight adjustment I would then have to reposition again, however in the end it worked.

I added this full explanation in case it was useful for someone else.

Thanks again for your time and effort Stefan.

The option you mention will be accessible if you save to an older file format. It seems as if it is no longer supported in files created in Word 2013.

I have this problem too. So how do you solve the problem without going backwards in versions which seems a retrograde step?
