Syncing OneNote between two computers only when they are on the same network...

Hi,

I know this was possible once before and I am wondering if the functionality is still available in OneNote or if Microsoft removed it with the addition of the cloud-based syncing.  Can I have my laptop and desktop synchronize their local OneNote files when both computers are on the same network?

If so, what different versions of Office can be synced together?  I.e., 2013 & 2010?  2013, 2010 and 2007?

Thanks,

Dave

Is it as simple as sharing the OneNote file across my local network and then opening the file using OneNote on the other PC?

Yes. Create it using File, New

The new notebook is a folder, not a file. Use Windows standard LAN  sharing. You can create the notebook directly on an existing Windows share.

I'm not familiar with the etiquette on this forum so please let me know if I should have started a new topic for this follow-up question after an answer has been identified...

Is there a limit to the number of different PCs that can use the same network-shared OneNote file simultaneously?  I'm talking about a reasonable number, maybe (4) max between two PCs, a laptop and a tablet.  In this case is there any significant difference in which PC hosts the file?

That is, if I mainly update the file on my laptop when I'm away from home is there any reason why I would want to keep the hosted file on a laptop share drive?

    Thanks again,

    Dave

Thanks Bernd.  Where might I find instructions on how to do this with OneNote 2013 or OneNote 2010?

I am using OneNote 2013 at the moment and when I select File -> Share I see "To share this notebook, you'll need to put it on OneDrive or SharePoint."

I'd like to ensure that however I configure this that files do not become corrupt because of something I did (such as would likely be the case if I continued to use Google Drive).  Is it as simple as sharing the OneNote file across my local network and then opening the file using OneNote on the other PC?

Any info would be greatly appreciated since most of what I find is related to OneDrive and SharePoint and documents for older revisions of OneNote reference menus and toolbars that have changed significantly.

    Regards,

    Dave

You can do this with all versions, except the FREE Onenote 2013.
