Can't open Excel files generated from web-based app.

Hello, I have a user who is using W7 and IE9. We have a custom web app that generates sales data from SQL that she is trying to use, but when she tries to generate a report IE does not give her the option to Save or Open, and an empty Excel window pops up with no report in it. She is the only user having this issue. For some reason, Firefox seems to work fine, which is what I have her doing now, but I'd like to find a solution for IE9. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks much.

    Hi Tom,

    Thank you for replying.

The computer which she has issues with does it have internet explorer 32bit or 64bit version.

When was the internet explorer 9 installed on that computer which has issues?

Try to test with a different browser on the computer which has issues.

Since she is able to open it on different computer, it may not be user profile issue, it might be an issue with specific computer. You may also ask different user to login to the computer which has issues getting prompt open and save and check.

    Let us know the result.

    Thank you.

    Ok,

So she logged onto another terminal and was able to run the report, go the option to Run or Save, the whole Shebang. Worked fine.

Then we ran the fix you suggested and that did not help.

    Should we re-install Office?

    Thanks again!

    Hi Tom,

    Thank you for replying.

Since the computers are on domain, ask the user to login to a different computer and perform a test.

If it still fails, try resetting the internet explorer settings as mentioned in the previous post and check if it helps.

    Let us know the result.

    Thank you.

    Hi Deepa,

Thanks for your reply. Her computer is connected to our domain and network. She is actually accessing this program using another user's credentials (yeah, I know) and his credentials are working fine on his computer, so it doesn't appear to be a permissions issue. Plus, she was able to do this before, then suddenly something changed and it stopped working. In Private browsing did not help. I have not tried the fix you suggested yet, I wanted to see if there were any other suggestions we might explore before I pulled the trigger on that one. Any other ideas?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi Tom,

I understand that one of the user is unable to open Excel files generated from web-based application. Let me help you with the issue.

In order to help you with the issue, I need more information:

From when is the user facing this issue, is the computer connected to domain or network?

Verify what happens if the user logs into another computer and then tries to generate the same report using internet explorer 9.

You may also try to open internet explorer using ‘In-Private browser’ option and check if the issue persists.

Refer to the link below to know on how to start the in-private browser:

You may also try resetting the Internet Explorer settings by running the fixit from the article below and then try downloading:

Disclaimer: The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might reset security settings or privacy settings that you added to the list of Trusted Sites.
