Excel Incompatible Application

I just downloaded Microsoft Office 2013 on my brand new computer with Windows 7 (I think).  Excel is not working; when I try to open the program, I get a prompt that says "Microsoft Excel has stopped working".  It allows me to either check online for a solution and close the program, or to simply close the program.  The problem details are as follows:

Problem signature:

  Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

  Application Name: EXCEL.EXE

  Application Version: 15.0.4605.1000

  Application Timestamp: 531f9cd9

  Fault Module Name: StackHash_abcc

  Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0

  Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000

  Exception Code: c0000005

  Exception Offset: 77c11234

  OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48

  Locale ID: 1033

  Additional Information 1: abcc

  Additional Information 2: abcc8f7853b48d9807d6d51eb1fa5df9

  Additional Information 3: abcc

  Additional Information 4: abcc8f7853b48d9807d6d51eb1fa5df9

I then tried to run the troubleshooting and got this prompt:

I am pretty computer illiterate and am unsure how to proceed.  I have read a lot about disabling add-ons to open the program in safe mode.  I really don't understand how to do that.  Any suggestions?

I get the incompatible program message with Windows 8.1 and Excel 2013. I reloaded Office 365 and obtained Excel 2016 replacing Excel 2013. Excel 2016 gives the same result - incompatible program. Windows 8.1 is on automatic updates. Other programs in Office 365, e.g. Word, work OK. I have restarted the computer several times. When I try to 'run' and enter excel/safe I get the message that excel can't be found. If I find the program using Browse and try to run it I get the same result - the program will not start. I run Avast Internet Security.
