I have  a long document with many sections, some with portrait page orientation and some with landscape. I have a problem updating the TOC when the orientation changes from section to section. When I try to update the table of contents it only updates to the end of the section and does not show headings in the following section with different page orientation.

Charles hello,

The problem is because of a bug in the "Update TOC" function of Word 2010. When using this function, all pictures which were inserted in the document appear after the TOC and the TOC itself is corrupted. By manually deleting the pictures after the TOC and also deleting unnecessary lines in the TOC a valid TOC can be created.

If you are getting unwanted pictures and text in your TOC, they are probably in a heading style. Your fix is to go to your document and apply appropriate styles.

Clarifications for Charles: The TOC is in the first section. My TOC does pick up headers behind the section not being read. Only headers after the change in page orientation (and section change) are not picked up in the update TOC operation.

You say "many sections" and then talk about the following section.

Does your TOC pick up material from sections behind the section not being read?

Is your TOC in your first section?

Any TextBoxes involved? Any Tables involved?

Frames and Textboxes in Microsoft Word
