windows installer patch package missing

Question

For some reason Word 2010 on my Windows 7 will not open.  It has been working perfectly until now.  I have tried to fix it automatically but I am getting a message saying

Windows Installer Patch Package Missing

Can anyone explain to me in simple terms how to reinstall the patch package by downloading it (I can't find any discs).

What is the fix it that you are trying to run?

Where you able to repair the Office program?

Thanks for your quick reply.   I have tried the above solutions but they have not fixed the problem.

In answer to your questions

2010 was preinstalled on the computer and Word has been working for two years until yesterday.  Excel is still working okay.

‘Windows Installer Patch Package Missing’ only while running ‘fix it’ or even while opening Word?  I only get this message when running "fix it".

Word will not open in safe mode either.

Are you able to open other Office applications?  Yes it is only Word that is not running.

As per the description you are unable to open the Word 2010 program. Let me help you with the issue.

I need more information before troubleshooting on the issue:

Which fix it did you try to run in order to troubleshoot the issue?

Did you purchase Office 2010 suite or was it preinstalled on the computer?

Do you get the error message ‘Windows Installer Patch Package Missing’ only while running ‘fix it’ or even while opening Word?

Are you able to open other Office applications?

Try the steps below:

Step 1:

You may unregister and re-register windows installer and check the result.

1. Click Start, all programs, accessories, Run, type msiexec /unregister, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.
2. Click Start, all programs, accessories, Run, type msiexec /regserver, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs, or you may briefly see an hourglass. After you run this command, the operation is complete.
3. Try your Windows Installer-based application again.

Step 2:

Try Working in Word safe and check if it helps. To know how to start Word in Safe mode, follow the steps below.

·         Hold Windows key + R.

·         Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

WinWord /safe

Note: There is space between WinWord and /

Step 3:

If the above steps fails repair the Office 2010 suite.
