Difference in sound quality between insert recording and narration for powerpoint

I would like to record narration for a powerpoint presentation, but I would like to do it one slide at a time and be able to re-record the audio for each slide if needed. I tried insert - audio - record audio for each slide, but the sound quality was terrible, like there was an ocean in my computer. Next, I tried slide show - record slide show - start recording. The sound quality was better (no ocean), but I need to hit escape when I'm done and hope it takes. Why the difference in quality?

Audacity seems to work well, if you want free software (or Adobe Audition if you want to shell out for Creative Cloud).

You might want to try using dedicated software to do the recordings instead.

Audacity is free and very capable.  More important, it allows you to choose the quality at which the recording will be made.  PowerPoint used to allow this but no longer does, and seems to auto-choose a very low quality level.
