Disabling the automatic umlaut maker

When quote marks are placed around a word and the first letter is a vowel, it automatically puts an umlaut over the letter.  How can this be stopped?  I just want to put quote marks around the word, not make it into a German word.  Currently one has go back and redo the word which is very time consuming and wasteful.

Hi,

It seems you are facing difficulties with the language preferences and automatic language options in Microsoft Word.

Check the Editing languages setup in Word:

File > Options > Languages

You can set the default language to English and check if it helps.
