Microsoft Office subscriptions

How many people out there think that Microsoft are chancing their arm by charging a subscription to use Microsoft Office? This really annoys me because I know it wasn't so long ago that computers came complete with a package that didn't require anything like this. It is my understanding that the subscription is really just there to ensure that the programs are kept up to date. Surely it would be fairer to charge up front for the package and then if people want or require an update then charge them extra. Microsoft just seem to be assuming that everyone wants the latest version and by taking this stance they are only thinking about their own profits.

Not sure why you think it relevant that we need to know what tech you have.

Well over 30, I was at Uni when the first PC became available.  Lost count on how many devices I have had (my devices do not define me), but this is the first time I have ever been asked to pay for the same software again, and again.  Like previous respondents, I want to decide if I want anything on my PC altered/upgraded, not someone else.  I am not interested in relearning technology - if all I need it for is being perfectly satisfied, then leave me alone.  I am only interested in what technology can do for me

    • if I need more, I will ask for it.  I'm looking forward to the day when society finally moves on from the bourgeois aspects of technology.

Both of the previous responses are incorrect (F1Whiz, and PGreenbriar), they may be under 30 years old. Whenever somoene purchased a laptop or desktop in the early 2000's Microsoft office was automatically downloaded the FULL version.

This is true, you only get a trail version of any Microsoft Office when you purchase any PC or laptop.

You have the choice to purchase the full version while building your computer.  Most computer companies do offer special deals that include Microsoft Office Basic, Home & Office, Professional and Business.   The only thing I did not like was the update from Windows 8 to 8.1.

Never that the update from Windows 8 to 8.1 was Preview.  Which would call Beta.  Call it what it is.

I just wish an update would no be available until it is truly complete.

    Happy 2014 to everyone.

Computers never came with any preinstalled add-on software unless the PC maker chose to supply such

The subscription model is a tried and tested business model used by numerous software suppliers

You can still purchase the one of version of MS Office you require, or even use one of the free office like packages from other suppliers
