Automatically update page numbering without using F9

Is there a way to have a document automatically update the page numbering (using Page X of Y) without having to select all and press F9? It seems to update automatically on pages 2+, but page 1 does not update if pages are added or deleted. Please help!

Assuming that Page X of Y is in the header or footer, both the PAGE and NUMPAGES fields should update properly.

Note that you can force repagination by switching to Print Preview (Ctrl+F2) and then go back to your previous view (ESC). Doing so would also update the fields.

Try substituting the field { DocProperty Pages } for { NumPages } and see if that helps.

Is it the total page count that doesn't update properly? In that case, this may be a symptom of an old bug with the NUMPAGES field which resurfaces at times. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/pagexofy.htm.

Thanks, however, it was in the body of the document just on page 1. I switched it to the footer. It still doesn't update right away. Seems you have to put your cursor in page 2 and move around, but it works better than in the body of the document.
