MS Excel Date Default Formatted with Commas

All the "/" date formats in my spreadsheets have suddenly changed to "," formats. This also includes the pulldown formats available in Format/Cells/Date Types. That is, these now show comas as the default.

For example:  4/20/2014 now shows as 4,20,2014. entering 4/20 results in 4,20. This happens when I open any of my previously formatted spreadsheets.

I've confirmed that my locale is set at English (U.S.).

I'd greatly appreciate help in understanding and correcting what happened.

This worked! While all my regional date settings looked appropriate, hitting the "reset" button fixed all. Thanks!
