Task Manager shows that Access consumes about 25% CPU on a quad-core machine when this happens. Apparently it is works hard, but I do not know what it works on.

When I do External Data > ODBC Database > Link to the data source by creating a link table > Click OK, Access hangs.
It initially uses 0.3% of CPU power, 27 MB memory. After the above action, it stops responding and immediately increases the CPU usage to about 20% on a quad-core machine, and the memory usage keeps increasing. I have waited for about half an hour and finally killed it.
It is reproducible. I have tested 3 times with 100% reproducibility. It was working before. I have not added any linked table for months, so I am not sure what has caused this.
Any tip to diagnose this will be greatly appreciated.

It came out after I got up, so I do not know how many hours it took.
Thanks for your prompt response.
I have Access 2013 only on a Windows 8 machine.
This is not related to any specific table or database. It happens after the "OK" button is clicked as shown by the following screenshot:
It is 23:11 here. I will look into it more tomorrow morning.
You are much more patient than I would be, knowing this should take only seconds.
* Does it happen on ANY table
* On ANY database
* Reproducible on another machine?
