Hi. I have Windows 7 and Word 2010. When I try to create a cross-reference I:

  1. Highlight the word
  2. Open the Cross-reference dialog box
  3. Set Reference type to Bookmark
  4. Set Insert reference to to Bookmark Text
  5. Check Insert as hyperlink
  6. Choose the bookmark under For which bookmarks
  7. Click Insert and Close

Then . . .the highlighted word disappears. What am I doing wrong?

In that case, you need to insert a Hyperlink, not a cross reference.  If you have the word selected, when you access the Insert Hyperlink dialog, that word will appear in the Text to display control and what you need to do is click on the Place in this Document in the Link to list and then you will see

Top of the Document

Headings

Bookmarks

      BookmarkNames

and select your bookmark from the list of BookmarkNames, then click on OK.  The word that you had selected will then be displayed in an underlined, blue font..

Hi Doug.  Thank you for trying to help me. I am want to create a cross-reference (hyperlink to a bookmark) from one word in one location to a subdocument heading at another location in the document. I did create a bookmark previously. It shows up in the For Which Bookmarks drop down and in a Go To search, so I believe it is active. - E

If you want to create a cross reference to the word that you have selected (highlighted), what you need to do is insert a bookmark at that point (while you have the word selected) and then, it is at the other locations in the document where you want that word to appear, that you need to insert a cross- reference to the text of the bookmark that you inserted.

If that is not what you want to do, please explain what it is that you are trying to do, rather than how you are trying to do it.
