Style Set Blocking

The Normal.dotx and Normal.dotm in Word 2010 has been changed and saved so that the Style Set Switching was turned on for "New documents based on this template".

However, when Word is reopened the Style Set Switching option is turned back on again.

Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how we can stop Word from switching it back on?

We are on a network, however, the testing has been done from a new Normal.dotm by removing all copies of the Normal files before reopening Word, opening the Normal.dotm file from the 'Roaming\Microsoft\Templates' location, turning the Style Set Switching off saving on the Normal Style and saving the Normal.dotm. Once complete Word is closed and reopened, however, the Style Set Switching option is turned back on.

Please HELP!

Thanks, Delma

Sorry, but your original post mentions "New documents based on this template," which is not the same as explicitly opening and modifying the Normal template. For the options we are discussing here, opening the template will be necessary.

    Hi Stefan,

As explained in my original query, all those options have been tried and tested. I'm now at a loss as to why it's not working as it should. The Group Policy should not be affecting this as I remove the Normal.dotx on the c:\ drive.

Is there anything else that could be affecting this?

If you open the Normal template as I suggested in a previous reply, and instead deselect the "Block Quick Style set switching" option, save and close, does that work?

Alternatively, just exit Word and rename the Normal template to, say, OldNormal.dotm. Restart Word. The template will be recreated, with factory default settings, the next time you start Word.

Yes, you are correct in referring to the "Block Quick Style Set switching", however, I can't deselect this option, it keeps turning back on when reopening Word.

I guess you are referring to "Block Quick Style Set switching" in the Formatting Restrictions dialog box?

If you want the option to be selected in new, blank documents you will have to open Normal.dotm as a document and select the option there. Save and close the template when you are done. (Usually, "Block Quick Style Set switching" is used in conjunction with formatting restrictions, but you don't have to do so.)

To open Normal.dotm quickly, you can do the following: From within Word, press Alt+F11 to display the Visual Basic Editor. Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window. Type NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument and press Enter. Normal opens in a separate window (and you should now close the Visual Basic Editor).

When you are done, save and close Normal.
